Phone Line Voltage:

A phone line uses DC circuit; Exact voltage varies, but is generally 50 volts
when the phone line is not in use (it's supposed to be 48 volts, to be
exact), and much lower when an extension is off the hook (one source reports
6 to 10 volts). When the phone rings, it switches to 90 volts AC.
