Web Programming and Internet Information

The first stage of Web programming is to design your Web pages. While at first this seems to be a simple task, it can be more daunting than it would first appear. Hermes, HTML - Style guide, Using the Web to Provide Private Information, WWW Authoring Information, Sun's WWW Site - U.I. Design, and the Geocitizen's Building Your Webpages At GeoCities.Com all provide you with the information that you need to plan your site layout and needs.

Once you have an idea about the layout and design that you want, take a look at these pointers to keep you going.

If you have determined that you need to operate your own server, you will need to start checking out the different ones. Netscape, the Microsoft Internet Information Server, and the CERN HTTP server are just a few of the different ones that are available. Other sources of information on servers include: Servers Comparison Chart, a list of Servers and some other Web Client Software products. The following table will give you some more information about your server choices.

After you have done this, if you needed to create your own site, you need to start working on your Web pages. I personally use Microsoft Frontpage (which includes a server) to layout and design my pages, but another editor is the HotDog Web Editor (for Windows).

If you are thinking about VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language -- 3D web pages) then you need to look at construct | VRML galore to see some VRML worlds..

One of the biggest items ever is the graphics issue and where to get them. The Art and Icon page can give point you at some of many graphic sites. But there are other resources available to help you with your artwork that aren't necessarly artwork. The Color composer, Pixelsight, the TransWeb Transparent-GIF Service, and Unix graphic viewers can help you here.

After you have finished creating your masterpiece, you need to advertise it. WebCom Guide - Publicizing Your Web Site will give starting places for announcing your site to the world.
