Privacy and Free Speech

The first, and most important thing, about privacy is to not give any more information than you have to to anyone. If you must give some information to get what you want, give them bogus information.

If some page wants an e-mail address, give them something like 'adsdfs@ibm.com'. The requesting page may check to see if the domain ('ibm.com') is valid, but it doesn't have time, nor do all sites allow, to check the user-id ('adsdfs').

For e-mail and news-readers: If you put your address in it, add something like 'NO_SPAM', 'no.spam.????' or 'REMOVE_THIS_WHEN_MAILING' in the address. A real person will know to cut it out, but the bots may have a hard time. And for all the bots know it is a valid address. (A 'bot' is a roBOT program that gathers information for someone. This information can be from anywhere on the internet.)
