Birla Institute of Technology is located amidst the beautiful surroundings of "Chhota Nagpur Plateau" region of India, in the village of Mesra, approximately 10 miles from the industrial town of Ranchi, at the confluence of Swarnrekha and Jumar rivers. It was founded in 1955 by the Hindustan Charitable Trust of the famous industrialist Mr. B. M. Birla, as an autonomous institution under Ranchi University. Since 1986 it has been accorded a deemed university status. Students are admitted based on a nation-wide entrance examination, held at various centers throughout the country. The institute currently has about 170 professors, and a student enrollment of about 1600, in departments such as: Chemistry, Civil Engg., Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engg., Electronics and Communication Engg., Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engg., Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physics, Production Engg., and Space Engg. and Rocketry.
