Claim to N64 fame: Met some staff from Iguana software in Austin, Texas who developed Turok.
History of my Hardware Collection | |
---|---|
Console Type | Story |
1 NTSC Japan | I saw what appeared to be an SGI workstation in a shop window in Hong Kong during September 1996. The workstation was actually a Japanese N64 unit that I later purchased from a bodgie street dealer for about $USD200 I also got my projector TV at the same time to play Super Mario in full glory |
1 NTSC USA | Exactly the same as the Japanese version - except they put a silly plastic key on the Japanese carts that is different to the US carts ! Solution - a special converter cart bypasses the plastic key |
2 PAL | Purchased september 1997 for my brother - trouble is I need a NTSC - PAL converter cart to play my old games- Blaze converter from Blockbuster does the job! |

Title | + | - |
Super Mario | classic true 3D platform, try on a projector screen to get
vertigo !
Little sign posts along the way give you all the clues to solve the game. This will take you months to solve (except my 9 year old brother who solved the minimum 70 stars in a week!) The game is saved to cartridge you don't need a save memory cart My favourite level is the Egyptian Desert High score 104 stars |
A bit tedious, but then you will get the 'gamblers rush' at about 30 stars when you try to get all the coins |
Pilot Wings | My first flight sim, fun just to fly around
Huge arenas to fly around in This has some of the funkiest music on any N64 game ! Apparently the hang-glider physics are very accurate according to a glider pilot. |
Not enough high powered blasters to create damage !
I have a Japanese version and can't read the Japanese menus! |
Wave Race | neat water animation | I found it difficult to control |
Star Wars - Shadows of the Empire | Excellent ambience
Multiple sub-games that are all slightly different - good variety |
Slower frame-rate than the newer games like Turok |
Turok | Essential violent title, (doom-like but more freedom and polygon
enemies, not just chunky sprites from doom)
Best FX - you even get lense flare when you look into the Sun! I think this game has the 'fastest' graphics engine on any game! Each level is enourmous |
I confess I did use the cheat codes Save points only in certain places You need a save cart to save game The animated death sequences are not suitable for young children. IB: I found this game a bit boring and the focus semed to be on coordinated hand/eye & killing, not on solving puzzles which was a trademark of DOOM. Nowhere near as good as Goldeneye. |
International Superstar soccer | best in multiplayer | I found it easy to loose players onscreen |
Blast Corps | Neat buggies to cruise around in | I found it a bit boring after a while |
Mario Kart | My favourite mode is 2 player on Wario stadium level
SC : My favourite 2-player level is Royal Raceway. I love the hairpin turns and the VERY slippery grass. |
The animated carts are a bit spritey when close-up |
Killer Instinct Gold | Very fast snappy | Warriors are only 2D, with 3D background |
Lylat Wars | great shoot em up
Rumble Pak is cool after you get used to it A hard-core arcade style shoot em up Some really cool FX - translucent layers, lense flare |
Can't save game in progress
The dumb sounding name is actually supposed to be 'Star Fox' but due to copyright infringement this had to be renamed for Australia. |
Golden Eye 007 | A 3D scenario/interactive environment game, not like Turok
in that certain characters in the game are your friend or contain game
clues that will stop you solving the game if you destroy everything!
The sniper rifle has a zoom mode that is very cool! Looks like you can spend on lot of time on the levels! - Try the most difficult level for a challenge. Multi-Player looks very interesting! The Death match mode is very cool! Rumble pack compatible! You can configure the controller layout in many ways-I choose the 1.2solitare configuration that is Turok compatible. If you have two controllers you can use both at the same time to controll the game! This game has so MANY different levels it really keeps you interested and will probably take months to solve it all! My favourite level is the Jungle level, turn up the volume for jungle sounds! WELL WORTH IT for all us adults out there! |
Arguably violent as there is some simulated murder |
Top Gear Rally | (SC)A great rally driving car race game for 1 or 2 players made
in the style of the arcade classic Sega Rally.
The physics of the front-wheel drive cars takes a bit of getting used to - the cars really understeer when you push them hard into a corner. This takes a while to get used to (especially after the oversteering rear-wheel drive MarioKarts). The action replay of the final lap is fun to watch - good TV-style camera angles and stereo sound. |
The facility to paint your own car is cool but requires a memory controller pack to save this for racing - a trap for young players! |
Hexen 64 | ? | ? |
Doom 64 | ? | I saw a demo in Blockbuster and found the port to N64 a little 'spritey' |
Wayne Gretzkeys Hockey | ? | ? |
Fifa Socker | ? | ? |
Extreme G | Very Fast, wierd landscapes | ? |
Diddy Kong Racing | Has been getting very good reviews "what Mario Kart
should have been". Supposed to be OK if you can get over feelings of
sqeamishness due to the cutesy characters.
The 3D animation is very smooth |
The kiddy characters make the game seem really for young kids |
Multi Race Challenge | ? | ? |
Clay Fighter | ? | ? |
Nagano Winter Olypmics | I like downhill skiiing and snowboard | No rumble pack support c'mon Konami! |
Tetrisphere | Cool Music | You need to think to much ... |
Automobili Lamborgini | Rumble Pack Support Neat multiplayer support Neato courses |
Not found many variations or cheats yet... |
Aero Fighters Assault | ? | I rented this and found I would not make a final purchase... The terrain was very low resolution I was bored |
Duke Nukem 64 | Good Blow-em-away, Cute things like Duke can go to the 'can' to relieve himself... | I rented this title and refuse to purchase my own as the 'enemy' sprites and just that - 2D cardboard cut-outs that rotate to face you if you try to look behind them. Looks like a port from the PC platform not worthy of the N64 processing power |
Yoshi's Story | 2D scroller | Very much a kiddie game |
Zelda 64 - Ocinara of time | This will take ages to solve- very much puzzle oriented -very nice touches - days pass and nights come (gets dark) - suitable for youngest kids | ? |
Turok 2 | Add 4MEG expansion for best result to get the hirez mode- graphics are like those you see on a 'voodoo2' 3d card on a pc (but you don't spend as much) - incredible lighting effects. very playable - the original was just kill everything, now there are kids to rescue, mission objectives, dinos to ride, multiplayer death match | definately Violent++ don't give to young kids |
Impossible Mission | Like 007 mission based Has a neat ending were you get to meet all the developers and have a big party | < 007 |
For Non-Nintendo hardware
