For Our Children
By: John Wendt WA6BFH

We often hear about the threats to "our children", and that it is the function of society and the state to protect them. It is considered that they are threatened by the evils and health hazards of smoking. It is conjectured that the culture they live within supports a degradation of values that will lead to debauchery from drugs, alcohol, or an irresponsible and unthinking sex life. It is certainly feared that their education is being impaired. I have heard several times over the last few years that our children's technical, science, and math skills are below those of most other countries on the face of our globe. Well, Atlas hasn't shrugged yet!

If a good basis in reason, responsibility, and more interesting stuff to do than get loaded or screw is whats needed, what better activity for young minds and bodies than engaging them in Ham Radio? It even provides a scientific realm of study! You know, if you don't really understand how analog works, digital knowledge ain't going to be worth a thing!

Actually of course Amateur (Ham) Radio teaches historic perspective and scientific advancement. It allows the licensed operator a marvelous range of communications experience to compare ideas and speak with others! Some of these methods might be Earth Moon Earth reflected signal communication, commonly called "moon- bounce". It might be through the variety of long deep orbit OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) satellites. It might be through digital "packet" communication, either conveyed via "micro-sat" low orbit satellites, or simple terrestrial path. Or, it might just be via good old short-wave Single Sideband (SSB) voice, or even continuous wave Morse code, communicating around our country or world on these same wavelength bands.

Well, I know our congressmen are concerned about the children! Maybe they would like to take some extra effort in protecting this "Amateur Radio high tech school" of ours, and its many threatened SHF, UHF, and VHF bands? What say ye Congressmen? What say ye the People?
