This is far from being a comprehensive collection of available emulators.
Rather, it is a collection of emulators that I've come across and have found
to be worthy of being mentioned on my glorious web page. Note that no ROMs are
available here, as most are illegal to distribute; you should already have
your own ROMs if you intend to use any of these emulators. However, I think
C64 ROMs are freely distributable and should be easily found on the 'Net.
Note: My interest in emulation is diminishing (for a short while, I was
following every emulation link I could find!) That doesn't mean I've
completely lost interest in the subject, but just don't expect this particular
section to be updated very often...at least not until good, usable, working
emulators for some of the better gaming consoles are readily available.
- Virtual SuperMagicom
VSMC is a very good SNES emulator, but the shareware version only supports
eight colours. The shareware version is for DOS, but the registered
version uses its own proprietary OS (which I have never seen).
- Virtual Super Wild Card
VSWC is another decent SNES emulator for DOS and the MAC. I once would
have recommended this emulator since it's free and not crippled in any
way, but the DOS version has not been updated in quite awhile, and other
emulators appear to have surpassed VSWC's capablities.
- Esnes
A pretty good SNES emulator for DOS, though not as good as VSMC.
Recently, this emulator has been updated quite regularly, so the above
comment (about not being as good as VSMC) may not be true by the time
you read this.
- Snes96
A decent SNES emulator. Snes96 is expected to be ported to various
platforms. A Win95 version is currently one of the platforms for which
it is available.
- SNES Professional
Not very good yet, but has a nice interface. It should improve in time.
Thus far, I would consider this to be the worst SNES emulator I've come
across.
- Kyoto
A Genesis emulator. It sounds like it will be a good emulator, but it's
not yet available. Look for a public beta soon.
- UAE - The Un*x Amiga Emulator
Originally an Amiga emulator for Unix, UAE has been ported to DOS,
Win95/NT, MAC, NextStep, and XFree86/OS2. This is one of the few Amiga
emulators out there, but almost certainly the best.
- C64S
One of the more popular Commodore 64 emulators. Unregistered version is
crippled.
- CCS64
A Commodore 64 emulator for DOS. Unregistered version unable to play
multiple-file D64 format.
- Personal C64
Another Commodore 64 emulator for DOS and Win95. Unregistered version has
joystick support disabled.
- Win64
Yet another Commodore 64 emulator for Win95 or NT. Win64 was originally
started in response to the other overpriced emulators out there.
- Sparcade
Emulates a large number of arcade games. The king of arcade emulation!
It even supports Sega Game Gear and Sega Master System games!
- EMU
EMU is a classic video game emulator. As of version 1.9, EMU supports
Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Lunar Lander, Gravitar, Space Duel, Black
Widow, Battlezone, and Red Baron. It will soon support Star Wars as
well.
- Kong
As of version 0.20, Kong emulates Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario
Bros.
- Mr. Do and Lady Bug
Emulators for the Mr. Do series and Lady Bug. I can't see myself ever
wanting to play Mr. Do, but in case you do, you can. Lady Bug,
on the other hand, brings back some memories...maybe I'll actually try
it someday.
- System 16 Arcade Emulator
An emulator for a number of Sega arcade games, such as Shadow Dancer,
Shinobi, and Altered Beast.
