In memory of Kodo and his valiant fight against Bay County, Michigan. Remember KODO!	In memory of the ferrets tortured and killed in Spokane, Washington Spokane / Novenber 1997
Kodo was a healthy, vaccinated, 11-month-old ferret with no history of biting. He was seized by Bay County Animal Control (BCAC) after an incident in which an elderly gentleman accidentally snagged his hand on Kodo's tooth. BCAC held Kodo captive, away from his family, for 42 days, during which they maintained it was necessary, in the interest of public health, to kill him and test him for rabies - even though he showed no signs of rabies, was properly vaccinated against rabies, and had a known history without risk factors. Despite a court battle by Kodo's owner, Robert Jacobs, and an international Internet and media campaign, Kodo was murdered by BCAC on 12 June 1997 at 1:00PM EST. This needless killing was performed under the guise of BCAC's concern for public health. In reality his execution only served to validate their own conduct and actions. Their final loathsome act was to carry out the execution without the decency of letting Jacobs and his family say goodbye to their pet. Equally reprehensible was the conduct of Michigan Governor John Engler and his staff, who cowardly refused to intervene, claiming they had no authority or power to do so. This site will link to, and be part of, the Kodo Memorial sites in perpetuity. Until such time as all states pass applicable ferret quarantine laws, this page background shall remain black.
