MFreeZone:Joe Camilleri
Joe Camilleri, was born in Zurrieq, Malta in 1921. As a child he was fascinated by photography. He remembers the day when his mother bought him a Brownie Kodak camera for three shillings. During World War 2, he was conscripted and joined the Royal Air Force. With the help of friends he was allowed to visit the photographic section where he could see the processing of photographs shot by RAF planes after their return from operational sorties on enemy targets. In 1946 he was released from service but remained employed as a clerk for 36 years.
In 1982 he became a member of the Malta Photographic Society where he developed his photographic skills through competitions, demonstration classes and discussion with friends. Besides winning numerous local awards, he has over 400 acceptances in International competitions. He has collected gold, silver and bronze medals, together with honorable mentions and certificates of merit. His works have been reproduced in a number of catalogs and magazines.
The Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique of Belgium awarded him two distinctions - the AFIAP for artistic merit in 1991 and the EFIAP for excellence in photography in May 1994. In 1993 he was made Associate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (ARPS).
Although he took up art photography rather late in his carrier, this has given him tremendous satisfaction and continues to fill his life with color and light.
