The Computer Dictionary which is published by Microsoft Press has the following definition of MUMPS:

"MUMPS - An acronym for Massachusetts Utility Multi-Programming System. A high-level programming language and integrated database developed in 1966 at Massachusetts General Hospital and used primarily in health care businesses. A unique feature of MUMPS is the ability to store data and program fragments in its database."
