I was recently (970420) given a workbook "containing a few Pivot Tables" by a customer and asked to document the contents and structure of the Pivot Tables.

Turns out that by "a few" he meant 52 (count 'em) different Pivot Tables each of which contains dozens of xlHidden PivotFields, plus multiple Row, Column and Data Fields. All of them seemed to be based on complex SQL SourceData strings aimed at a bunch of ASCII text files. Great.

I quickly realized that I could write an AddIn documentation utility in the time it would take to document 3 of these things "by hand", let alone 52.

So, I did it. PVDOC01.XLA is an AddIn that works in Excel 5 or Excel 7 (and presumably in Excel 97) by adding a MenuItem "Pivot Table Documenter" to the xlWorksheet Tools menu. Activate any worksheet in any workbook and choose MenuItem "Pivot Table Documenter". If there are any PivotTables in the workbook they will be documented in a new workbook. The source code is in the accompanying PVDOC01.XLS to look at or fool around with.

Both files are packaged in PVDOC01.ZIP (33 Kb).

Please let me know if you download it, use it, find any bugs in it, get any mileage out of it, improve it. It works. Enjoy.
