The Computer Room

I've been working in the computer field since the early 1980's. My first real job in the field was with a Beltway bandit (government contractor), working on a VAX/VMS system. In January, 1984, my career direction changed. That month, I attended a special meeting of the Washington Apple Pi Apple users group. Steve Wozniak (yes, that Steve) brought several members of the Mac development team, including Bill Atkinson and Burl Smith, to show off their new toy. It totally blew me away. The Macintosh was clearly a whole new paradigm in computing, and I wanted to be a part of it. The next day I put my old CP/M computer up for sale and threw the Atari in the closet, and within a few weeks had ordered a Mac 128k, an ImageWriter, and a few other odds and ends.

By the end of 1985 I had joined a startup firm doing Macintosh development, initially in Forth and later in C and C++. I worked exclusively on the Mac until about 1996, when the company I worked for made the switch to Windows. More recently I've also been doing some programming on Linux.

Although I no longer work as a Mac programmer, I still think it's the best system available, and my home machine is an iBook G4. I also have a few older Macs lying around, one of which, a Performa 6360, I use as a web server.
