What is EMM386?
Those of you who have no idea what (or who) EMM386 is might have a hard time understanding the first paragraph on my page. Fortunately, HELP IS AVAILABLE!
I have included a brief definition of EMM386, as well as a summary of what all those technical nerds claim it does.
- Professional's Definition
- An advanced utility designed for 80386 and above computers with the goal of managing a computer system's extended memory. Hence, Extended Memory Manager (EMM) for at least 386/xx processors (386). It must be present, along with HIMEM.SYS and your expanded memory manager in your CONFIG.SYS file. It's capabilities include access to the upper memory area and using extended memory to simulate expanded memory when neccessary.
- Real Definition
- Okay, enough technical jargon, let's get to the heart of the matter. EMM386 is an absolutely neccessary tool for your computer. However, I can't think of another driver that causes anywhere near as many crashes. I guess the best way to describe EMM386 is the saying "Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em."
