Bit by bit the snow birds (one of the nicer things we call tourists) are finally leaving. You can see it in the traffic. The Interstate isn't quite as busy. The condos along the ocean are boarded up again. And the lines getting into restaurants are getting shorter. Even the gas prices have started to go down a few cents. So now it's time to stock up on your Hurricane supplies. Batteries, bottled water, candles, canned foods, matches, flash lights, etc. Now that I've been through 2 Hurricanes I know exactly what to expect. Weeks and weeks of no electricity, no water, no food, no sewer, no A/C! It's the AC I miss the most. I've found that all in all I'm a pretty good pioneer. I just HAVE to have my A/C! (lol) Ok, so maybe I'm not THAT great of a pioneer. ;) One thing I've learned is that once you clear off the screened porch is stays cleared off till after Hurricane season! None of this in and out and in and out crap. Those chairs and tables are heavy! I've also learned it's not necessary to take down all the Christmas lights on the porch. Since they hug the ceiling they're safe to leave up. I'm just hoping this season won't be a repeat of last year. The weather here has been perfect. High's in the low 80's during the day. Lows at night around 70-75 with no humidity. That's the surprise. Usually by now the humidity is starting to climb. But so far, (knock on wood), it's perfect weather to be outside, and perfect weather to have the doors and windows open. It's also perfect on the electric bills when you can keep the AC off! So here I sit at my computer smelling someones bar-b-q through the open window next to me. It reminds me of those warm summer days of my childhood. Warm sun, cool breeze, and the smell of hot dogs and hamburgers roasting on the charcoal grill. Our whole family would be assembled. My brothers would be playing catch with my dad. My Mom would be getting food on the table. I'd be sitting in the cool grass just taking it all in....or maybe I'd be on the swings. Once the burgers and dogs were done we'd have lunch. We'd snack on chips while we ate burgers and my Mothers famous potato salad. After lunch we'd all go running as fast as we could into the lake. Although we lived close to many of the Finger Lakes in Upstate NY, it seemed that we always went to Watkin's Glen on Seneca Lake. The water would be ice cold. Even in the middle of the summer the temp would be in the 60's or low 70's at best. Being kids it never seemed to matter how cold the water was. We'd just stand there until or arms and legs went numb, then we'd swim all over. Eventually it would be time to get out of the water and get ready for the drive home. We'd grab our towels close to our shivering bodies and race each other back to the picnic table. It's funny, I don't think people picnic anymore. I know our family hasn't gone on a picnic since before my Father died. Geez, has it really been 19 years? Oh what fond memories I have of meat roasting on a charcoal grill. | ||||||
