When Dune's first song was released, Hardcore vibes, no-one expected it
would ever be followed by a second one, let alone that Dune would still
be alive nowadays. It all started as a techno project by the current
producers Burhoff and Oettrich, which was supposed to be a one-time
project. They named themselves Dune, after the famous book/movie/game
Dune. The song was such an succes on the European dance floors and in
the clubs, that it was released on single. When it also became a
success in the charts, the producers realised it had to be followed by
a second single. A third composer, Froning, joined and a new single was
released. It was a cover version of Are you ready to fly ?, the hit
female dance-act Rozella scored in 1991. Since Dune wasn't a real band
yet, the lyrics were sung by Tina Lagao. After the succes of the single
Burhoff, Oettrich and Froning started working on an album, which was
released as the self-titled debut album Dune.
The breakthrough
The third single, Can't stop raving, appeared on the album Dune as
instrumental song, but was re-mixed to be released as single into a
faster style, and lyrics were added. Dune now was a real band. Oliver
was chosen to play the keyboard, while one of the dancers of Dune,
Verena, became lead-singer of the band. Her pretty voice and pitched up
vocals caused the major breakthrough for Dune scoring top ten hits in
Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and lots of other countries throughout
Europe. Shortly after the release of the new single Rainbow to the
stars, Dune released their second album Expedicion. Both single and
album did not only meet the expectations of fans and critics, they
exceeded them. The great video clip of the single helped it on it's way
to the top, adding Dune to the list of renowned electronic music bands.
The big success
For those who hadn't listened to the album yet, the single Hand in hand
was a big surprise. The song boosted its way to the top position of the
charts and became Dune's biggest hit until now. The happy sing-along
sound of Dune and this song in particular was a hand-in-hand combination
with the warm weather making it one of the big summer hits of 1996. The
leader of the album, Million miles from home, was chosen as official
song for the 30th birthday of Star Trek, however it could not achieve
the same as Hand in hand. Nevertheless it reached various top ten chart
positions, which is quite an achievement to do time after time for
bands producing electronic dance music.
Dune Forever
Fall 1996: Dune surprised their fans with both good as bad news: the
good news was the release of a live album Live! recorded at a party in
Rastatt, Germany on Verena's 21st birthday. The bad news was the
announcement of Verena leaving the band for a solo-carreer. Fans
expected one more single from Expedicion and faired the end of Dune,
none of all that occured. A brand new single was released, the last one
with Verena, and Dune flabbergasted friend and fea with their cover
version of Queen song Who wants to live forever. Instead of turning it
into a fast rave song, Dune proved not to be just a techno band by
keeping the song very close to the original. The single was still at a
high position in the charts, when a new album titled Forever,
containing only ballads, was released. The second single became the
cover of Sinead O'Connor's Nothing compares 2 U.
