Chris' Unter Water Page ...

Once upon a time I was looking for some interesting sports activities in the sports department of my university, Dresden University of Technology, and I came across "ABC-diving and under water rugby". I was not so sure what I had to expect and so I went there...

I didn't ask so much and jumped into that pool. Of course, we need to warm up. After those 20 minutes you're completely done, but now it's time for the game. OK, what are the rules? Both crews wait at either sides of the pool for the start signal while the ball is sitting in the center of the pool, 5 metres below the surface. The ball is filled with sea water to prevent it from floating. Then each team tries to catch the ball and "throw" (which means "carry") it into the goal of the other team. Those goals look like thrash cans and are also located on the bottom of the pool, near the walls. The goaly may have a hard time when the air in him doesn't last as long as the attack lasts. Then some of the players have to watch the goal for a second while the goalkeeper goes up to get air.

Later we became acquainted with a teacher of a diving school near Dresden. After some dry lessons we made our first experiences with the whole diving equipment in the pool. Then there was the first time to dive into the waters of the real world. The lakes in Germany are not very clear, in some you can't see more than 1m far or even less. Diving in a depth of 6-7 meters may be like diving in the middle of the night. And these lakes are sooo co-co-cold!!!

In Malaysia, especially in Tioman, I had the chance to enjoy some nice and lonely beaches. The water was so warm that you can snorcle there for hours and watch the beautiful corals and colorful fish.

During my time in Japan I went to some of the seven islands of Izu. Hachijoojima is located 300 km south of Tokyo and is the most southern of those islands. I went snorkeling in some small fishing ports to get shelter from the open sea. Well, yes, there was quite some trash on the ground, but I was so amzed about all the intersting fish. The rocky coast was also really inpressive.
