After a long flight to South Africa I spend one day in Cape Town at the mission home only to get up the next day and fly to Port Elizabeth. There I found my first Companion Elder Jarman. We didn't have a car so the sisters were there to greet me and drive me home as well. We we got to our apartment it was about 9:30 - time for bed. Elder Beisert, a german Elder was there to greet me in our four-man boarding. After a short introduction he asked, "Did you like the MTC?"
"Yes, I loved it!"
"Oh. You're going to hate it here." With that he turned and went off to bed. I stood there not knowing what to thing. I didn't detect any sarcasm in his voice. My companion just chuckled and showed me our room. I couldn't believe how dark and dirty everything was.
