A late Jason Euell goal ensured The Addicks
took a deserved three points against Chelsea as they beat The Blues
2-1 at The Valley.
The striker grabbed his second goal of the game on 89 minutes after
chipping goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini after being sent clear by Chris
Bart-Williams's clever flick.
The former Wimbledon man had earlier volleyed the Addicks into a
72nd-minute lead, before Frank Lampard equalised for the visitors
against the run of play with seven minutes left.
After a scrappy start the first meaningful action of the game saw a
Charlton penalty claim turned down by referee Graham Poll after a
William Gallas challenge on Euell.
Charlton, enjoying more of the possession, looked to turn up the
pressure on a Chelsea side struggling to find their rhythm.
Bart-Williams was just unable to convert a cross after good work
from Chris Powell and Paul Konchesky. Then Mario Melchiot got his
body in the way to block a fierce drive from Matt Svensson.
The Addicks came out with all guns blazing in the second half as
they looked to impose themselves on an out-of-sorts Chelsea.
Konchesky in particular went close to breaking the deadlock, the
youngster twice testing Cudicini.
Chelsea enjoyed a rare opening when Mario Melchiot headed over on 65
minutes, before seven minutes later Charlton took the lead.
Konchesky's centre was headed back by Svensson into the path of
Euell, for the striker to hit home on the full from the edge of the
area.
Within moments of that goal Charlton went close to doubling their
advantage, Gallas coming to Chelsea's rescue as he cleared off the
line from Svensson's strike.
With the game entering its final throws Chelsea levelled when Graeme
Le Saux's cross was laid into the path of Lampard for the midfielder
to fire home.
It looked as though the spoils were to be shared, but with time fast
running out Euell hit his dramatic winner to give Charlton all three
points, and in the process complete the double over Chelsea.
