Helping Requirements
Two helping credits per three month semester (one helping credit is earned for each 1 1/2 hours of assisting)
Best Options: Tuesdays 6-7:30pm and Saturdays 9-10:30am
Monthly Exams (given last week of that month)
Group A.
Month2 Groundfighting: defense against a shove or swinging attack, a rear takedown, or pins. Techniques: groundfighting stance, flipping and tracking, moving forward, tumbling, leg grab, power stance, getting to ground safely, getting up safely, front stomp kick, side thrust kick, axe kick, eye strike, elbow strike, knee to groin strike, Groundfighting musst include: 20 degree angling, loud yelling, ferocity and spirit, good control and safety with partner, running for help after each defense, and environmental awareness, Review and upgrade of all defensive releases for chokes or grabs.
Verbal Yang: direct language and appropriate intensification of verbal communication. (To be shown to Instructor)
Group B.
Month 2 Moving basics: haddan makki, sang su haddan makki, sangdan makki, pakro makki, onro makki, sang sudo makki, traditional palm block, flap over kwan su, chong kwon, kwan su, sudo strike, yok sudo, palgup, e kwon, inverted jab, guarding block.
Moving stances: wide kima jase with knees out & feet parallel, chongul square with front toes slightly in and back foot slightly out, back balanced hoogul jase with feet at a 90 degree angle to each other, relatively deep stances

Warm-ups and Dumbbells
Please arrange with an instructor to be tested on them. You are encouraged to do this within the first month, and may do it the first day of class if you are ready!
Pushups: 5 on knuckles, 5 on fingertips, 5 fingers touching and pointed in, 5 regular (all from knees or toes with correct form)
Abdominals: 5 of each type with proper form (crunchies have hips and lower back on the ground; above the belt off the ground)
Dumbbell Routine: 5 of each done continuously with appropriate size dumbbells

Requirements for Yellow Tip
Paper on school patch and yin and yang (due by the 10th of the third month of the semester, minimum three pages) about the school patch -- explain all parts of each depiction and what these parts symbolize. Tell how this philosphy applies to karate. Give at least ten dichotomies seen in karate. Tell how the dualistic and cyclical natures apply to life in general, and give specific examples of how this applies to your life in particular. Your paper must include all of the above elements, so please read this carefully. (You will also need to be prepared to answer questions regarding this information orally on your exam.)
