Prologue:
Shupaa, his mate Ania and his sister Udole live together in their territory, with a new litter of five pups. Naturally, the parents have a favourite; the firstborn, and name him 'Warithi' or 'heir', for he is the one who will inherit the territory after them, and is raised to do so.
There really isn't much rivalry between the pups despite this; except for what you'd usually expect from little siblings. Playful games and bouts of teasing are all but normal. The four younger ones know from the start that their older brother is the one who'll take over the territory and they'll be the ones to leave, and accept this from the start without a second thought. So the parents nurture Warithi the most, perhaps a little too much, and the cubs all grow; he becoming more proud and territorial by the day, the others more tricky and wild. Then, there comes a day where each of the pups is to bring a kill home to their parents, to show how much they've learnt.
So, the youngsters set out to retrieve offerings of food, but the eldest pup turns out not too good at hunting, and thus bullies the fresh hare that Matata and Teza had caught, leaving them only time to retrieve an old mangled carcass for their parents. Unfortunately, the meat on it was so old and rancid, it actually poisoned their father, Shupaa, and caused his death. This, of course, causes Warithi, who in that instant inherits the territory, to banish the pair early and warn them never to have anything to do with the family again; as much in 'revenge' as to hide the fact that it was partially his fault.
And so, the siblings, alone, set off to make their own in the world, the outcasts; The Wahuni.
