MercuryMail started out as a school project. I wanted to create a program that would be: Beneficial to a lot of people; Be relatively easy to create; and most of all, USABLE!. After doing some research, I was finding that a lot of people were complaining about Junk email. So, I said to myself, self, why not create an email program that would filter the junk out but let in all the good stuff that we do want? Excellent Idea! Thus, my partner and I went to work on the problem then MercuryMail was born........
MercuryMail is an interesting program in that it DOES NOT require an ungodly amount of disk space, memory, or a Ph.D. to operate. It is a simple offline/online email editor program. The filtering algorithm is not user configurable, but it can be disabled. It has an address book for all of your addresses and all of the usual Windows functions. It is not designed to work with AOL, CompuServe, or any other Online Service. It is primarily for those users that are connected to the Internet via an ISP or proxy server on a LAN/WAN system. This is the first release and future releases are in the works.
When you get your email, most of the time it contains a myriad of junk mail similar to your postal mailbox. It is annoying, aggravating, amd most of all, clutters up your inbox. Time is the greatest factor in most peoples' lives. Why spend it wading through the junk when all you care about is the stuff you really want. Most SPAMMERS are bulk emailers that send their ads and promotions from servers other than their own. They change their addresses often, so they are hard to catch. Some people think that governement legislation is the answer to stopping the SPAMMERS, but with the Internet largely unregulated, how are thy going to enforce (across potentially international boundries) these laws. THEY CAN"T. Others say that filtering their mail is an infringement upon other people right to free speech! Not so. I am not directly interfering with their generation of bulk e-mail, I JUST CHOOSE NOT TO RECEIVE IT! Period. I feel that they are infringing upon my rights by wasting my time in having to deal with their stuff! But, why bother with it, I can't turn around and send it back or send the an unsubscribe message to stop it. They won't even get it!. I have browed Usenets, Newsgroups, magazines, etc. and all I see about this is that people are fed up and are searching for an answer. With MercuryMail, there will be no more XXX ads, "Make More Money" get-rich-quick-schemes, chain-letters, or 'flamers' in your mailbox. It is a truly wonderful product, because you, the user, controls who you receive your messages from.
