 | This book concentrates on social aspects of the computing. When viewed in connection with social issues, there are very few technological inventions as controversial as computers.
This book addresses the real-life problems, social or ethical, encountered when using or misusing computers. It is interesting to know that most of the bad guys are either in government or working for a large cooperation. When I was at the university, I took the Software Engineering lectures as a part of curriculum. Our instructor, Dr. Tunc Balman, gave us many interesting aspects of computing from a social point of view. The most interesting one of these lectures (to me) was the "Code of Conduct" of ACM. Years later, I wanted to get the whole text of this document and found it in this book as an appendix. This is why I had bought the book in the first place. However, the other parts are as useful as the appendix. The book has chapters on computer crime, software theft, AI, viruses and hackers. |

 | Each chapter in this book tells the story behind a hackers life, motives and methods. It is interesting to see how hackers become hackers, how they think and how they "hack".
After reading this book, I tried to do some of the tricks mentioned here with the phone system and for the price of a local call I made an international call. It was my lucky day. This happens to be the extend of my hacking activities and I owe it to this book. That's why I like the book. |

| The first book I had read about programming. I have found this book in university library when I was in the first week of my first year in the Computer Engineering Department. I was looking for a book that will teach me programming and I have seen this book that told entertaining stories. At that time I only enjoyed it. But after years passed by I started to realize the importance of reading it as well. And I remember one sentence after 15 years "Programming is a social event."
After I have earned enough money to buy this book I have found out that is was out of stock. Now after all these years, they are publishing a revised version. It will be out soon. Come on, queue in, this book should not be missed. Programmers; this is your life, try to understand it. |
