Just watched Mighty Joe Young.
Terrific, terrific script, nicely underplayed
the whole way through (except for a couple of parts at the end
that get a little silly).
Ape looks great, especially his face, which has
more expressions in an hour and a half than Al Gore has had in 50
years. A couple of times he looks digital but most of the shots
are convincing.
There's a young blonde actress in it who does a
nice job and Bill Paxton is terrific as usual. No joke, this is
one of his better roles. There isn't a lot of "story"
to his part, but he brings and immense amount of characterization
to the role just through his face and attitude.
Two or three times you'll think-- didn't I see
this part in King Kong? But hell, it's a giant ape movie. There's
gonna be some overlap.
The Disney touch only gets a bit heavy-handed
at the end. The Disney influence is also there in the beginning--
for a company that makes kids movies, they sure know how to do
death and tragedy effectively.
Anyway, the film was a delight.
