I just finished watching The Band Wagon.
A brief recap of all the great moments:
Triplets Song
I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plans
Dance in Central Park
I Love Louisa
By Myself
That's Entertainment (the first time
through is quite funny)
The script is quite
good for a 50s musical (my favorite moment is Cyd Charisse's
crying scene: "I've been AWFUL to you! I'm not used to being
awful--it's been a *terrible* strain!" sniff).
Also, the long number at the end--a tradition
that Kelly foisted upon us--is the best of its sort. It is a
Mickey Spillane take off and is very funny. ("She came at me
in sections. She had more curves than a scenic railway.")
If all that isn't enough, in that Mickey
Spillane number Cyd wears a short red sequin dress. Slit up the
side. Red shoes. Black opera gloves.
She and Fred do a jazzy, sexy dance in which
she places one sublimely long leg on his shoulder and slides the
other one behind her. Fred slides backwards the length of the
floor.
Sorry, Rask. When you're talking musicals,
Audrey just ain't in the same league.
