Just back from "A Simple Plan." A better title would be
"The Evil Living." Sam Raimi tries for an
"art" film -- a la his pals the Coen brothers -- and
fails. Your basic "idiot plot" (ie. the action is
propelled by people acting in a totally indiotic and unrealistic
way, bringing about disaster, after disaster), but because Raimi
is aiming for something "higher," the damn thing takes
forever. Two hours -- and you can feel every minute coming. Bill
Pullman is tiresome. Two (count 'em ) expressions. Billy Bob
Thornton (who years ago was supposed to have directed this thing)
wasn't bad, however. Bridget Fonda does the standard-issue
manipulative-bitch-from-hell, unaided by a plot that renders the
character more absurd than usual.
In short, a must to avoid.
I hope everyone will be thankful for all the time and money I've
saved them.
