Went to the movies tonight. Saw "Tea With Mussollini,"
the new Zefferelli with Dames Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Joan
Plowright, and non-Dames Lily Tomlin and Cher. Very, very
entertaining. But the real news is Cher, who gives an all-stops-out,
super-deluxe, glamingly gilt-edged star performance the likes of
which I haven't seen in a poon's age. She's beyond fabulous. She's
flawless. This is why she's a star. A REAL star (Gwyneth, pack
your bags!) And this is why we go to the movies in the first
place. Zefferelli's simplest, least showy film. Clearly he had
his work cut out for him just keeping up with those ladies so we
don't get any tours round the furniture. The story (an
autobiographical vignette) is DEEPLY gay, in ways I'd prefer
going into after more Fraysters have taken a look. An anti-facist
film from Zefferelli -- whodathunkit!
Once again -- Bravo Cher! (Cellar gives his deepest bow.)
