Return

I saw a sneak preview of Proof of Life last night.

Russell Crowe plays an excellent stoic hero, and the screenplay is written rather well. (It must have gone to rewrite only a few times.) I was never lost, nor was my intelligence insulted. Meg Ryan is unremarkable. And, of course, it's always nice to see Hollywood continue its demonization of far'ners. As I was walking out, I heard a patron call the movie, "a chick flick for guys."

David Morse does a very convincing job. One gets the sense he's more principled an actor than his on-screen wife. Although the couple is oddly well matched in their head-in-the-clouds yippiness. I should also mention that much of the Latin American scenery, well-chosen locations all, evoked a sense of both splendor and bitterness. Why so lush a landscape should give harbor to cocaine is a riddle only addicts can solve.
