I saw "Trick" in a tiny multiplex in Dupont Circle
tonight, a film about lust and desire between two young men,
frustrated by mildly odd characters of NYC reminiscent of a much
darker "After Hours."
Jim Falls directed this story about Gabriel (Christian Campbell),
a nerdy but cute boy who is trying to be a musical composer, and
Mark (John Paul Pitoc) a sculpted go-go dancer who decides to
pick up Gabriel on the subway.
The obstacles to their lust include Torri Spellings, Gabriel's
best friend, (a much scrawnier and screechier version of Lesley
Ann Warren), a straight roommate from hell who is using the boy's
apartment for banging his girlfriend, a nelly friend and fellow
composer who offers his pad but ends up instead reconciling with
his fellow pudgy ex-boyfriend, Torri Spellings' weird friends,
and the obligatory drag queen from hell.
This is the second movie I've seen Spellings in in which she
appears to risk just a tiny bit acting something other than her
television persona -- the other movie was House of Yes. Her
character must be irritating and clingy and she fits that bill
quite well.
Not to be a spoiler, but this light flick ends on the hints of a
big musical number. Beautiful boys. Theatrical music. Heaven.
