Return

Too long by about half an hour (I'm aware that's not an original comment).

Good points include all the performances, "Hollywood" courage in having a sociopathic homosexual be the villain, avoiding the pat in many instances.

Bad points include a gratuitously graphic murder (Dicky's), crappy ending, poor job of deciding what to leave in and what to leave out.

What should have been left out: father showing up in Italy and bringing the private eye, the scene where Law catches Damon mugging in front of the mirror (this isn't too terrible, but the movie needs cutting somewhere), probably all of it after Paltrow's confrontation with Damon upon discovering the rings. I didn't buy the father would team up with Paltrow (emotionally, IMO he'd blame her for whatever had happened to his son). Also, why would he and the detective have any control over her so as to force her to leave with them?

What should have been put in: More Gwyneth (good but wasted performance); more of the Italian detective; some sort of climax (done, finished) when Paltrow, Damon, and the last boyfriend are all in the apartment; something else that I thought of immediately after the movie but have forgotten now (?).

Had a lot of promising elements but they weren't orchestrated successfully. Definitely worth one watch (if you aren't overly offended by homosexuality or brutal murders), but I wouldn't watch it again...it has no interest IMO once you know how things turn out.
