The Straight Story: For the first 15 minutes of David Lynch's film about a man (Richard Farnsworth) who traverses over 300 miles on a riding lawn mower to see his ailing and estranged brother, I felt like I was being put in a trance. It is slow and methodical and you may be tempted to tune out. Don't. Lynch's film is a lyrical beauty, and I cannot remember a picture more true to regular folk. Stick it out. The payoff (not in terms of plot development - it is a slow ride throughout) is well worth it. Grade: A.
