Btw, I went to see Notting Hill. Generally I'm not a fan of Hugh
Grant's but I liked him in this film, perhaps because he does
what he does best, be charmingly diffident. He actually portrays
some depth of character in this role, too.
Actually, the film was good, very droll in parts, and does put a
human face on some of the unpleasant consequences of fame and
objectification for women "movie stars". Julia Roberts
plays a very believable Movie Goddess, again perhaps because she
has lived some of what the film was about. And I was reminded of
how voyueristic the public (in this instance not American but
British - just as bad I think) is wrt to modern movie idols.
There is the darker theme of the feeding frenzy of the papparazzi
and their constant quest to get another fix for their demanding
clients (the public). And there was the charming normality of
being somewhat taken aback by a *real, live, movie queen*
entering into regular people's lives. The starstruckness of it,
and also the speed at which the objectification disappears when
normal people get a chance to see behind the mask was well done.
All in all, a very nice film, leaving one with good feelings and
romantic to boot. Very romantic. I'd say this is a good date film.
