This weekend I saw two movies. The first was Erin Brockovitch. Everyone is probably familiar with the plot. The critics were near unanimous that EB was a manipulative piece of fluff that was more than redeemed by the charms of Julia Roberts and the meticulous crafstmanship of director Steven Soderbergh. Sure, Julia Roberts is charming and Soderbergh does a decent job with some rather thin material (and crafts an excellent seduction-getting-to-know-you scene comparable to the one in which Clooney and Lopez get together in Out of Sight). However, for the most part I was bored after the first 45 minutes. I give it a mild recommendation for anyone in need of an afternoon diversion.
