Frenchcat and I saw the restored version of Jean Renoir's Grande
Illusion on the west side in August where it played to a full
house. It was a rare delight. The entire cast, but especially
Jean Gabin and Eric von Schtroheim, was fantastic. I love the
cabaret scene where the French prisoners dress up in burlesque
and entertain the German soldiers. Apart from La Cage aux
Folles I normally dn't think drag sequences are very funny,
like Rupaul and its offshoots in the early 90s, but this was kind
of charming, if only because it was one of the first. I hope you
get a chance to see it.
