Dissertation title: Role of Lipid Peroxidation in Retinal diseases

·         Cell culture investigation of the role of carboxyethylpyrrole (CEP), a docosahexaenoate derived unique protein modification, in stimulating angiogenesis, implicating its importance in Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

·         Characterized retinal protein adducts and retinal protein expression after intense blue and green light treatment on rats for understanding the molecular mechanisms leading to retinal light damage. Identified oxidatively modified (CEP, argpyrimidine, and nitrotyrosine) proteins using 2D electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometric analysis.

·         Screened human plasma samples by ELISA for CEP and ethylpyrrole, protein modification as possible biomarkers for AMD

Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI                                                          Jan 1999 to Jun 2001

Advisor: Dr. Deborah Heyl-Clegg

Dissertation title: Aromatic Amino Acid Replacement at the N-Terminus of a Nonselective Opioid Deltorphin Analog: A QSAR Study

·         Synthesized deltorphin peptides (Tyr-D-Ala-Phe-Gly-Val-Val-Gly-NH2) by replacing the position one tyrosine (Tyr) with analogues of varying electronic, steric, and acid/base character, including ring-substituted tyrosines, para-substituted phenylalanines, and other nonaromatic and heterocyclic amino acids. The synthesized peptides were purified by HPLC and purity was verified with mass spectrometry.

·         Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) was done on the binding data to understand the role of phenolic hydroxyl group in mu and delta opioid receptor binding.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai India                                       July 1996 to Jun 1999

·         Synthesized, purified and characterized Tetraphenylporphyrin.
