Some of the early results from our garden in 2002

Later in the summer, the pests began to take a terrible toll. We had resolved not to use chemical pesticides and so I cooked up a garlic and oil spray but it didn't seem to help much. I might not have developed the best system, since our spray bottle seemed to clog up and then break and a larger pressurized sprayer had trouble delivering the mixture also. I did however have a very strong garlic odor about myself for a while.

I'm not sure of the variety now, whether the Belgian Giant or Omar's Lebonese, but this plant produced a large sweet fruit of a pale orange color that were very tasty!
Well, that's 2002. I'm working on a concept this summer to fill in some of the cultivated areas with grass, and others with wildflowers. We will cut back on the area of our garden, and stick with some proven winners, or possibly try a few new things. I'll plant them all outside or buy some small starters already grown from a greenhouse. The "big" new garden idea I would like to pursue is to work some grape vines using a concord seedless variety into our backyard landscape. This may have to wait a year or so, since gardening funds may be severely limited and you have to order them now! (February or earlier...)
