Seaman First Class Vernard Eugene Bivin was killed in action on board USS
Salt Lake City (CA-25) during the Battle of Cape Esperance, and was
posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
Destroyer Escort DE-536 USS Bivin was built by the Boston Navy Yard and
commissioned on October 31, 1944. During World War II she escorted
convoys in the Admiralty Islands, Palau Islands and the Philippines. USS
Bivin was decommissioned on January 15, 1947.
