There are many types of faeries in existence. Each lives in one of the four basic elements: air, water, earth, or fire. Below you can learn more about the faeries that reside in each element.

The Origins of the Word Fairy

The word fairy comes from the French word faerie.
The word faerie originated from the Celtic word Fa'ae.

A faerie is defined as any small, humanoid creature with mystical powers who can control certain aspects of nature such as weather patterns and seasons.

In short, a faerie is a magical creature that has set free the imagination of man throughout history. And secretly, even in the hearts of those who claim not to, each of us wants to believe.

The Air Fae

To all fae bearing wings, air is the element of choice. Every storm and breath of wind is their work, from the tiniest puff to the most terrifying gale. They often take the shape of birds, or incorperate aspects of such an animals design into their human forms, and are particularly fond of birds' wings. Many speek the language of the birds, and on occassion are known to teach human speach to birds and other air-borne creatures. Air is a creative force, resulting in the intellectual versatility of air fae, who often

stimulate inspiration and imagination in others. Fae who fly are the most evolved of all faeries because they have incorportated aspects of each element into their own being. Their wings are of air, their legs of earth, their shimmering of fire, and their shape-shifting abilities reflect water's fluidity. Combined with these four basic elements is the fifth, little-known magical element, moonlight.
Slyphs, Trows, Phooka, and Fachan are among these.

The Water Fae

Running water is a favorite haunt of faerie kind. Crossing through, or over running water is a way of entering their world. The size of a body of water doesn't matter to these creatures. Oceans, rivers, streams, and even tears and raindrops can harbor faeries.
Water faeries heal and purify the earth. They usually visit humans in dreams.
Undines, mermaids, selkies, the fir darrig, beansidhe, leanan sidhe, and kelpies all dwell within the realm of water,

The Earth Fae

The element of famed faerie circles, earth fae are the spiritual force of nature residing deep within the earth. They can be found within barrows, rocks, roots, caves, quarries, and mine shafts.Earth fae work in and maintain the physical structure of the earth. Because of their close relationship to wood and metals, their craftsmanship is far more superior than anything a human might produce. In the realm of the earth fae two basic categories can be found: Mountain fae and Forest fae.
Among Mountain fae one may find Goblins, Spriggans, Dwarfs, and Trolls.
Forest fae include pixies, leprechauns, brownies, the green man, will'o'wisps (pictured here), bally boggs, and boggarts.

The Fire Fae

Pagan holidays such as Midsummer's Eve and Samhain are well-known for faerie phenomena, as they gather around the ceremonial flames. Hearths are also frequented by fae folk. Bringing wealth and gifts to their masters, fire fae are known to be hard workers in farmyards, workshops, kennels, and stables. These lively spirits should be provided with prompt and proper gratidue. Fire sprites reflect the volatile nature of their element and can become quite hostile when they feel slighted.
The element of fire harbors salamanders and drakes.
