stuff

that I dig...

(Wow...first entry (12/28/98) since I decided to waste some server space at GeoCities in August. Ummmm...I guess I'm just pacing myself. Yeah. That's it....)

Linux: Enjoy the Ride

I can't do a damned thing of importance with it yet, but I love it. Guess that makes me one of the trendoid geeks jumping on the techie craze of the moment. ObligatoryButI'mDifferent: But I've wanted to learn Unix for quite some time, and the price can't be beat. As soon as I figure out how to successfully configure PPP (ye olde point-to-point protocol) on my home system, I should be in a position to avoid the W2K (Windows 2000) problem.

(2/10/99 -- Lo, another link.)

There was a time when I would render obeisance to the latest copy of this magazine.... Although extremely interesting, the information was just too useful. Well, maybe not so useful for the average reader (like me). But knowing fully well that I'll never end up designing my own...I dunno...experimental tokomak or something, I choose to spend my time here.

(2/25/99 -- "And the firmament did part, and the heavens were rent asunder. Unto the unwashed masses did Bill -- even he -- bestow another link, saying unto them, "to the flames of perdition with thine asses!" And Bill didst cackle, and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.")

It's a Winmodem. A friggin' Winmodem. Actually, I've known this for quite a while, but just felt like sharing another extraneous, worthless tidbit of my life with you. It's no wonder that I wasn't able to get PPP up and running....
Damn you, Bill Gates....damn you to hell.

(4/16/99 -- Some longhaired booklearnin' fer ya.)

I've taken the day off from work. The culprit? Your garden variety Voodoo Death Cold from Hell. I've spent this morning in bed, aghast over the wasteland that is network television ("...Coming up: 'O Fowl Temptress' -- Men who romance chickens, and the women who love them. Stay tuned!"). Ummmm....no thanks.

So I'm about to settle down with a book that I've owned copies of over the past ten years. It's a personal journal of thoughts written (in times of peace, as well as on the front lines in times of war) by a compassionate, profoundly wise, deeply sensitive, and genuinely humble man, who also just happened to be Emperor of Rome.

(4/17/99 -- "Zany madcap hijinx! Rip-snorting, knee-slapping hilarity! The feel-good hit of the year!!! -- Joel Siegel, Good Morning America)

Still feeling under the weather, so I padded around all day in my bathrobe, et al. Woo-hoo! It was just like being Hef at the Playboy Mansion!!! Well, except for the pipe. And the Grotto. And the swingin' chyx. And the swanky decor. And the jet set lifestyle. And....

So I ended up watching one of my favorite films...one which I consider to be the work of a true master -- Akira Kurosawa's Ran (Japanese for 'chaos'). The film itself was released in 1985, three years before Kurosawa's passing. My "Cliff's Notes" review? The story, set in feudal Japan, is an elegant retelling of Shakespeare's King Lear. Through the deft brushstrokes of Kurosawa's cinematography, as well as through strong performances on the part of the actors, the film powerfully captures the human condition -- love, honor, loyalty and betrayal; cruelty and regret, loss and grief (or the lack thereof)...as well as the struggle within to accept the capriciousness of Fate. And much, much more.

But don't take my word for it. In not seeing it, you are denying yourself the very education that you are supposedly devoting the blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda....

Ooh! South Park is on; gotta go.

Next scheduled update sometime in 1999.

(4/10/00 -- Yeah. Right.)
