Joseph Sando was born at
Burra, South Australia in 1858. His parents Anthony and Elizabeth had
emigrated from Redruth, Cornwall.
After five years of marriage and three children they
built a house at 23 Albert Street, Dulwich. They lived there for
25 years before buying a newly surveyed farm at Karoonda.
During World War I five of their sons enlisted and
fought in France. Arnold was injured but both Leslie and Sydney and
Leslie were killed in action. It had been intended for the sons to
inherit the property.
In 1918 Sarah and Joseph moved into a house they
purchased a house at Brighton, Adelaide.
Joseph died at home, Brighton, Adelaide, age 69, in
1928. |
Sarah Jane Edwards was born at Redruth, Cornwall,
England, in 1862. Her father, Thomas, a copper miner, died when she was
eight days old. At age twelve Sarah and her mother, Elizabeth, emigrated
to Adelaide, South Australia, on board
CITY OF ADELAIDE, in 1873. Also
on board was Elizabeth's brother, WIlliam Nancarrow, with his wife and
his seven children.
Days after arrival in Adelaide Elizabeth died of
Typhoid and the orphaned Sarah lived with her uncle and his family. At
the age of 25 Sarah married Joseph Sando, whose father and grandfather
had also originated from Redruth, Cornwall. They had eleven children,
one of whom died in infancy.
Sarah died at Adelaide, in 1947
age 85, leaving 10 children and 28 grandchildren. |
