"The first task was to enclose the land, and on the Government
undertaking to be responsible for that, the Superintendent's house,
and other buildings at the garden, Francis and his first two workmen
began clearing, preparatory to trenching.
By May, he had six men employed at 7/- a day--- Robert Tweedy,
Joseph Fitch, John Heapley, Robert Boyd (who was to remain at the
garden for half a century), Philip Boyd and George Bryant.
The clearing and the levelling proved expensive, for there was
scarcely a road which had not been cut up by the cartwheels or
obstructed by stumps or the holes from which trees had been removed."
