First & important thing. Aussie visa rules have been changed from April 2003. Check out this page (http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/skill.htm). Check the "Attention changes" at top of the page. Skilled migrants & students can apply for Permanent Residency (PR - Yahanka Green card) who has 115 points total. Now let me explain about point system.
Little about Point System
As per this page (http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/skill_points.htm), migration is allowed under Skilled - Independent or Skilled Independent Overseas Student category. They need to have 115 point total. Now points are given in different categories, which are as bellows.
1. Points for Skill - For most occupations where training is specific to the occupation - 60 points
2. Points for age - 18 to 29 years (at time of application) - 30 points
3. Points for English Language - Competent English - 20 points Now this totals to 110 points. That's simple Maths mate.....
4. Points for specific work experience - for at least 3 of the 4 years immediately before you apply - 5/10 points (check details on site)
5. Points for occupation in demand/job offer - For occupation in demand with/without Job Offer - 5/10 points (check details on site - http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/modl.htm) 115. If this applies to u then u r in. No worries mate.....In many cases, freshers does not have this luxury, so what they used to do after having 110 point is to study here for a year. 1 year aussie education used to award 5 point. And here we go, we have 115 points. I.e. 110 +
6. Points for Australian qualifications - For an Australian qualification/PhD - 5/10 pointsBut, this is no more case from April 2003. This is given below.We fall into General Skilled Migration. In that, General Skilled or Overseas Student.
Little about direct migration without studying
If u have 115+ points then choose this, unless yor visa got rejected by UK/US & u r really really interested in studying (like me, trust me mate). In General Skilled Category, check "Skilled Independent" (http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/skill_general.htm#3). Now check "You Must" clauses here on this link. Unless u have some special setting like native aussie, etc, this will apply.
Little about studying & migrating
U need to have 2 Years of Aussie education. Now little about education system. Now this is as far as I have understood.We generally do Masters or PhDs & we get admits here in any Uni easily. There r only international students in masters, so don't u worry.
Now 6 month (generally 4 subjects) gives Diploma.
1 yr (8 subjects) gives Graduate Diploma (they call it GradDip).
1.5 Yrs (12 Subject) makes Masters.
Previously, after GradDip u could file for PR & continue 3rd sem. By the time u finish 3rd Sem, u used to receive yor PR. Now since this 5 points clause is made to 2 years & most of the courses are still 1.5 yrs. this is a tough call. We (International students community over here - some thousands, may be) have really not yet found a way out of it.
Little about Job Scene
I'm not very sure about the prospects post education, white collar job. But general gut feel is not very healthy. But it is not great in Mumbai/Pune any way. But I'm positive about the prospects. I think its like in Mumbai, u can get a job within 2 months if give dabake interview & search carefully.Check out some of the aussie job sites: www.seek.com.au
Little about Finance
As far costs are concerned, don't expect & don't count on scholarships/grants. U might cover 3rd sem through part-time working. Not all but may be partly. But u may have to pay 1st/2nd sem fees from your own currencies. U may need 1/1.5 K aussie $ for 1st 2/3 months & initial setup cost till u get job. Then u can recover through job. These job includes Hand carwash, office moving (we call it professional HAMAL), kitchen hand (bartan - yes u r right, that's it), waiter (they call it runners), telemarketers (office main baith ke marketing), door-2-door marketing and many more. Now these job have no headache of responsibility so we can give up any time & concentrate on studies. General fees are around 6000-8000 AUD per sem so that's 18 K for 3 sems i.e. 5.6 lacs. If u r taking it on loan it will be 6.5 + interest.As a student, u need to define your goal & then come over here. If can spend this much & have confidence to recover it, then Life here is cool, else Mumbai is not bad. This is to just to pinch, so that u can think twice.
Check your consultant or IDP, Churchgate for possible course/city/Uni.
By the way, Melbourne is cooooooool place, which is in Victoria state. And as aussies say, "Victoria - The place to be........"All the Best ... C
