Answers To Lesson Five

Newspapers On-Line

Some of the newspapers I found on-line were:

  1. Michigan Live - The Grand Rapids Press (My hometown paper)
    URL was http://gr.mlive.com/
      Information Available is
    • Obituaries - were quite a few listed
    • Weather
    • Searching (only 1997 & 1998 information)
    • Travel information (good if traveling to this area)

  2. New York Times
    URL was http://www.nytimes.com
      Information Available is
    • Obituaries (only a few that look like only those worth mentioning - such as writers, etc. - not real helpful)
    • Cybertimes (didn't look like much help on anything)
Just news articles that are current
    • Metro Section - for local news

  3. Gazeta Bankowa Online - Since I am Polish - thought I'd check this out
However, not much help as all is written in Polish and I don't understand the language! The URL is http://www.bankowa.com.pl/bankowa/on-line/body.html
Even thought I'd have Altavista translations translate some of it, however, it doesn't do the Polish-English (yet?)

Overall, I didn't find any that listed marriages, but then I didn't check them all out either. Most did list obituaries, but was not a complete section. I would assume only the smaller papers would list all obituaries. And some papers did have where you could search for things, but since the internet is so new, most papers only have the last several years available so not much help when doing older research! Overall, it was interesting knowing that you can access so many different newspapers from so many different countries. It was fascinating seeing the different languages available on-line. On the whole, however, don't think this would be very helpful if looking for older records. Would be helpful if you wanted to know what is happening in a region that your ancestors came from. Or to travel to that area, the papers did mostly have travel information available. That would be helpful if you are planning a trip there. Also most listed the weather information which might be helpful if planning a trip to an area!
