[Local Links] - [Remote Links] - [Bookmark Links] - [Non-Web Links]

In this lesson, we will teach you what links are, and how to make them on your page. Links are an important part of your page, as they link people to other places on your web page, or places on the Net that you think they would enjoy. There are four different types of links.

1.Local Links - Links within your Web Site.

As you start creating your page, you will find you may have more than one page or .html file. You will use the Local Links to take people viewing your first page, to another page in your web page that you have created. The opening tag for this kind of link is <A HREF="filename.html"> the closing tag is </A> An example would be:

<A HREF="page2.html">See my next page</A>

When the viewer clicks on the link, it takes them to your page2.html
Try it out... Create a page called PAGE2.HTML..any simple page will do. Then put your link to it in INDEX.HTML - Cool stuff!

Note:On each page that you add to your entire Web site, you should link each of the other pages, so people, can easily explore your site.

2.Remote Links - Links to Web Sites on the Internet.

These links would be to Web sites you like and would like your viewers to see. You would create a link to that Web site like this:

<A HREF="http://geocities.datacellar.net">Visit here for a place to put up your page</A>

When the viewer clicks on the link, it takes them to the geocities home page.

3.Bookmark Links - Links to other areas on the same page.

This link is a good one to put on a long page, where you may refer to things, such as pets you like, or flowers you grow, or cars you collect. For this type of link you need to do two separate commands. At each place you want the bookmark link to go to, start with <A NAME="name to refer ie.Muffin"></A> Then the link on the page would be: <A HREF="#Muffin">Find out about Muffin</A>. When your viewer clicks on the Muffin link, the page will go to where you put the <A NAME="Muffin">, so they can find out about your pet named Muffin. We have used Bookmark Links on this page, try them to see how they work. Also, look at the source code for this page...you'll see how the links are positioned and used.

4.Non-Web Links - Links to Internet services, that are not on the Web.

This link is one you would use to have people e-mail you comments or questions about your web page. This is called "Mailto:"
The link would be:

<A HREF="MAILTO:yourname@your.provider">E-Mail Me</A>

Make sure you also write out your e-mail address on your web page, just in case a persons browser does not recognize this link.
