How to take care of beau:
- Do not give beau unlimited food- he must be given one
bowl/day or he will sit there and eat as much as 6 bowls of food at once
- Beau must not be left outside alone. If left inside
he will just sleep all day, if left outside he will chew through
ropes or pull out chains. If he gets free he will bark at strangers, fight
other dogs, and run in front of cars.
- Beau must be on a leash or rope at all times when let
outside under supervision. When I was painting the house I untied him for
just 5 minutes and he ran out in the street and scared a lady just walking
by. This was while I was right there watching him.
- Beau will only throw up if allowed to drink water too
fast. Food consumption is unrelated to the throwing up, and he is unlikely
to drink water fast when there are not people around. He should be stopped
after 10 laps, and then allowed to continue drinking for another 10 laps
after a several second break. He must still be allowed to drink as much
water as he wants, or he will become dehydrated. The throwing up is not
caused by drinking too much water, but by drinking it too fast.
- Beau is allergic to any natural fiber cloth (wool, cotton,
etc.) and should not be allowed to lay on furniture, clothing, blankets,
etc. for any period of time or his stomach will become red, swollen, and
sore. He can only lay on carpet, or polyester blankets.
- Beau is highly athletic, and needs to be walked a
significant distance every single day. He cannot do this alone as
he will run off. He also needs lots of attention and playing daily.
- If you want beau to follow a command try giving him a meat
or bread based treat (no sugar)
- If beau is not listening use the “out” command. If he
continues hit a newspaper against your hand and he will obey immediately,
if the desired action is obvious (such as not eating food on the table).
Never hit him with your hand, or the newspaper, or he may fight back, or
become shy or depressed and go hide in the corner (maybe for several hours
or even a day).
- Beau must always have a stuffed animal toy to play with or
he will damage furniture, house plants, or cats
- Food must not be left out on the table when people are not
eating or he will eat it
