Audio Device Hardware Purchasing Tips

Audio Cards:

Tip 1: If you are purchasing a new audio card for your OS/2 system, one of the things you need to find out, obviously, is if the card you want is compatible with OS/2. Check the IBM's Device Driver Pak On-Line to see if your audio card is supported by OS/2 first.

Note 1: Most new audio cards are not manufacturer supported by OS/2. Check with your manufacturer to see if your card is supported after checking the IBM website.

Note 2: IBM support for OS/2, as we know it, expires June 2001. Go to the Device Drive Pak On-line while you still can.

Tip 2: If the new audio card is compatible with the Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro, Gravis, Turtle Beach or something similar, you should have no trouble using that card with OS/2 since OS/2 (and just about every other operating system with multimedia features) supports the Sound Blaster standard. Also, if the new card you want is completely compatible with your old card, you should have no trouble using it under OS/2, too, though it will not fully support all features of the audio card.

Tip 3: If you have an older machine or have purchased a non-Plug-and-Play audio card (most likely second hand), you will need to configure the audio card according to the manual that came with your audio card, usually by manipulating jumpers on the card itself, before installing it in your PC and running Selective Install in the System Setup folder.
