About me

I am a student at Indiana University in Bloomington. I began enrollment here in the fall of 1996. I am currently majoring in the School of Business, with a concentration in Computer Information Systems.

Why did I post these pages?

A while ago I purchased my first computer. Soon after I began desiring hook up with my brother's computer, mainly in order to play games, but I was also interested in file sharing since my floppy drive did not always seem to get along with his floppy drive, especially with multiple disk file archives. (Disk spanning) Our quest was to play Doom II or Quake and to make a Direct Cable Connection work. What began as an easy little undertaking soon became the biggest headache I had ever seen. Not only did I find Microsoft's and ID Software's documentation on the subjects highly deficient, but finding assistance elsewhere was extremely difficult. My brother and I, (he is a few years older than me) spent many days devoted entirely to experimenting, scratching our heads, browsing online for help and asking help of every possible person at every Radio Shack store and software stores. We were told every wrong answer and given just a few good leads. I think it took us about 10 months, but we finally got connected. Once we got all the dials tuned in right, it went great. (like those utopian instructions assume) Since I was so frustrated at the manufacturers and instruction book writers, I set out to do what I think they didn't. While all of the information and possible bug problems were fresh in my mind, I sat down and spent a few hours constructing the pages about null modems, and dcc. I later added the others. The page about jargon or technical terms is also for the benefit of others and so that I will stop forgetting what they are. I am surprised at how well things can get lost in my foggy squeaky mind.

Other Information

Along with the information that I have provided I feel that it is of nearly equal value for me to make a good attempt to answer questions sent to me via email. During the winter months I check my mail about two or three times per week. In the summer months when I am at home, I will also try to keep tabs on it, but since I will be accessing over a modem, I do not suppose that I can be as frequent.

My current plans are to pursue my degree. After that I am not 100% sure about anything that I would like to do. I am always open to ideas, but not always willing to act. It does not hurt me to think about something but it may hurt me to venture into a scheme. (This is not an invitation for any get-rich schemes.) I suppose that I would like to pursue a career in the computer field rather it be working for a company or taking a stab at having my own small business on the side.

I love to work with computers. I spend many hours of my days in front of one. Although they can be fun, I also value my time spent outdoors and with family and friends. For me, too much time in front of a computer is time wasted.

I just said that I love to work with computers, this is true, however, my main passion is not programming or any other activity in which I must interact with the monitor. I have the most fun with what I can do when I get the computer case cover off. I like to build computers, change things around, experiment with and test hardware, and I would love the opportunity to do the same with networks, but I find this opportunity hard to find as most of those who have a network either don't have time for me at all, or they want me to have experience with it first. I can't get experience without it. *shrug*

Here are a few small pictures of me. The page is about 50K total. Photos

Thanks to:

I have some thanks to give to a friend of mine who I have known before college and who I now correspond with frequently. Daniel was sometimes involved with the making our computer connection as we referred to his expertise fairly often. He also helped me keep straight some of the technical specifications when I was writing the pages about DCC and null modem. A few of the words in those pages are his words. (therefore, credit to him recognized there)
