The 1st. phase of the 1996 Brazilian Championship is finished. The championship had 24 teams from 9 different states of Brazil. Each team had to play against all the others in just one round. The 8 better teams are classified to the 2nd. phase. Now they have to play 2 games in 2 teams groups
(1 x 8, 2 x 7, 3 x 6 and 4 x 5). The better team stays playing until the last one becomes the champion.

The 2 worst teams of the 1st. phase will play in the 2nd. division in the next year.
