Morocco data

Kingdom of Morocco is located at the north-west of Africa, on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, separated from Europe by the Straits of Gibraltar. Its capital is Rabat, its surface is about 740 000 km2 (285 640 sq miles) and the Moroccans are 27.7 million in 1998 (demographic growth = 1.7 % per year between 1994 and 1998).
The Moroccan unit of money is the Moroccan dirham that is linked to the dollar and the yen and European money units, mainly French franc and from January 4 1999 to the euro; 1 USD = 9.2 MAD, 100 JPY = 8 MAD and 1 euro = 10.5 MAD.

Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral system: a lower chamber called "Majlis An-Nuwab" (Chamber of Representatives) and an upper one called "Majlis Al-Mustasharin" (Council Chamber). Its official language is Arabic, even if a derived idiom is the often-spoken tongue; Berber is as well used (Tamazight in the Souss, Tashelhit in the Center-East and Tarifit in the Rif), Northern populations speak also Spanish and other regions use different dialects, and most Moroccans (except those who live in the North) understand or speak French.
The country is mainly populated by the Arabs (about 70 %), the Berbers come in the second place; a Jewish minority (their number has dramatically decreased this century) lives in different parts of the kingdom. The Moroccans had anyway been broadly mixed with Muslim Andalucy, but also Europe and even Africa.
The official religion is Islam, but the monotheistic religions coexist in Morocco, although Judaism is more practiced than Christianity which is mainly by foreign communities.
