Ned, Dan, and Peter!
L to R Ned, Dan, and Peter Murtagh

In 1998, the three Murtagh brothers, Dan, Peter, and Ned, were playing golf in Ireland when someone suggested it would be fun to play every year. We all enthusiastically agreed, and Dan, very generously, commissioned The Cornawilla Cup in honor of our birthplace in Co Armagh, Ireland. Ned donated a "US OPEN" style Green Jacket to the affair, the winner holding the Cup and Green Jacket until the following year.

And so it was that in July 1999 we played the first of what we hope will be many Cornawilla Cups! 1999 was also our first experience of Corballis G.C., Co. Dublin - an insidious, Par 69 Links Course, that has driven the most mild mannered of golfers to distraction. In driving rain and roaring winds we braved the elements for three days until a winner 'surfaced'! As one seasoned hacker remarked . . . "It wasn't rain at all, it was buttermilk!"

Peter: Cornawilla Cup Winner 1999!
Peter Murtagh

Peter, exhibiting a tenacious and competitive spirit usually reserved for getting the barman's attention at Duffy's Pub in Malahide, hung in and won handsomely. Dan and Ned were a bedraggled second and third respectively! We all went home chastened by the weather but resolved to return in the Millennium Year 2000 and do battle again!
