Kalos frequently asked questions
AnswersWhy are you giving the program away?.
Because it is a good way to make the program known. Besides, we expect to be reported of bugs or errors.
No, sorry. We know that many classicists use Macs but (at least while unsponsored) we cannot afford developing the program on another platform.
Yes, we have the technical knowledge and tools to do it. If we fail to get academic support from some institution, we will probably try to implement these features anyway, but it would imply much more time and effort, and we would sell new versions instead of giving them away.
Because we translated most meanings ourselves. If you discover translations rare or that could be improved, please let us know so as we can modify them it in our database.
Our three year-old daughter Manuela.
Not yet. Some people asked files via FTP or e-mail in order to set some mirror sites, so maybe there will me some next.
You should try by all means to get the files via web download, since we cannot afford emailing the files to everybody. If many people is interested, we could occasionaly send the files to a given FTP address, or to a bunch of e-mail addresses, but not on a regular basis.
Geocities is a free-based web site. That’s why some sponsoring adds (cars, books, etcetera) appear sometimes when opening a page (sponsoring Geocities, not us!). We pay a small fee in order to get enough free space for KALOS setup files and pages. But it seems it’s crowded. However, it also depends heavily on the hour and your communication speed.
Your "xxx.zip" file has been downloaded uncomplete. Try downloading it again. If the problem persists, then maybe we didn’t upload it complete.
After a long period of inactivity on the communication, some browsers "think" the download is complete although it’s not. Some users also reported that Netscape is able to resume the download at the point it was stopped, instead of starting over.
In order to fix some errors, it is not necessary to overwrite the whole set of files installed by KALOS. Most errors are located in three specific files (KALOS.exe, KalosOcx.ocx, GRIEGO.mdb). Many reported bugs of "program hanging" types are corrected by replacing the two first files. As they are short, it’s easy to download and upload them, or even to send them via e-mail. The third file is the database file, and as it’s larger (1 Mega zipped), it will be updated and uploaded less frequently. It normally contains "information" errors, such as a missing form, etc.
This is not properly a Kalos error. It responds to a variety of causes, related to your system configuration. We cannot give you a specific way to deal with it, but here is a cheklist of possible hints.
mfc40d.dll, 870k, 6/10/95
mfco40d.dll, 650k, 6/10/95
msvcr40d.dll, 429k, 29/9/95
oleaut32.dll, 463k, 15/8/86
If they aren’t, re-run the setup making sure to answer "yes" if the setup asks you to write them instead of other files.
It’s due surely to an error in the program. Please report it so as the bug can be fixed.
Any comment, error report or suggestion is very welcome and will be answered, and your contribution properly recorded.
